10 Packing Hacks That Will Change the Way You Travel Forever

I have packed for more trips than I can count, and I have learned every lesson the hard way so you do not have to. Here are the packing hacks that have genuinely changed how I travel.

ONE — BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE, NOT AN OUTFIT LIST
The biggest packing mistake people make is planning outfits instead of building a capsule. When you plan outfits you end up bringing 14 pieces for 7 days. When you build a capsule around a neutral color palette where everything mixes and matches, you bring half as much and have twice as many options.
Stick to cream, white, tan, black, and one accent color. Everything goes together. Everything works for multiple occasions.
TWO — THE HALF RULE
Lay out everything you plan to pack. Then put half of it back.
You will never regret packing light. You will always regret overpacking. This is the single most reliable packing rule in existence and experienced travelers will tell you this every single time.
THREE — USE PACKING CUBES
If you are not using packing cubes you are missing out on one of the most satisfying travel upgrades available. They compress your clothes, keep everything organized, and make unpacking at your hotel genuinely enjoyable. Game changer.
FOUR — ROLL, DO NOT FOLD

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them saves significant space and actually reduces wrinkles. This is especially true for linen, cotton, and casual fabrics.
FIVE — DECANT YOUR SKINCARE
Full size skincare bottles are heavy, wasteful, and almost always exceed TSA limits. Transfer your products into small reusable containers before you pack. Your bag will be lighter and your skin care routine can still be exactly what it is at home.
SIX — BRING A LUGGAGE SCALE
Overweight baggage fees at the airport are one of the most avoidable travel expenses there is. A small luggage scale costs almost nothing and saves you from an unpleasant surprise at check-in.
SEVEN — ONE STATEMENT PIECE, NOT TEN
You do not need a different pair of earrings for every night. Bring one great pair of earrings, one great bag, and one elevated piece of clothing that can dress any outfit up instantly. Let that one piece do the heavy lifting.
EIGHT — PACK AN EXTRA EMPTY TOTE
This has saved me on every trip to Europe. Markets, wine shops, olive oil, local ceramics. You will inevitably want to bring things home and a packable tote takes up almost no space and weighs nothing.
NINE — KEEP A RUNNING PACKING LIST
Somewhere on your phone, keep a running note of things you wish you had packed and things you packed but never used. After three or four trips your list becomes a perfect packing guide tailored specifically to how you travel.
TEN — WEAR YOUR HEAVIEST ITEMS ON THE PLANE
Boots, your heaviest jacket, your chunkiest sweater. Wear them on the plane rather than packing them. It looks a bit ridiculous at the airport but it significantly reduces the weight of your checked bag and nobody cares what you look like in the terminal.
